About Us

The Walker House is the home of Harvey and Martha Walker and their youngest son Justin Paul, better known as JP.  The Walkers have lived in the Austin, Texas area since 1992.  Prior to coming to Austin, they lived more than 20 years in Arlington between Dallas and Ft. Worth.  Hospitality is not new to the Walkers.  For most of Harvey and Martha’s forty-plus years of married life, they have shared their home with others who needed a place to live for one reason or another.  Harvey is retired from the Cain Foundation, and Martha is the former owner of Dodge City Steak House in Pflugerville.  As owner and manager, she took care of her employees and customers in such a way that she enjoyed low turnover in personnel, and the patronage of a regular clientele.  “Miss” Martha’s desserts, all made by her from scratch, were as popular as the steaks.  The Austin American Statesmen reported that the Almond Joy Cake was “to die for.”

Hosting a bed and breakfast has long been a dream floating in the back of Martha’s mind.  She loved company when she was growing up and remembers telling her mother that she was going to have lots of company when she “got big” and had her own house.  Now, she invites you to come make her dream come true by being part of that company.  She will wait on you as much as you like or allow you to make yourself as much at home as you desire.  Whichever is your style, it is her joy to serve you.

The house, itself, is a large white stone house built in the style which Martha refers to as county chic.  You will stay in beautifully and uniquely decorated rooms and enjoy the use of the well-stocked Sunshine Room, a coffee/snack room, as well as the Freedom Room, to visit, study, read, play board games, and watch TV or movies.  The Walkers have a large selection of videos, and you will be free to browse through a library of books that spreads through four areas of the house.  “Miss” Martha’s pies, cakes, or cookies, along with coffee, tea, and soft drinks will be available for your enjoyment when you need a snack.  You may also enjoy a complimentary glass of  wine.  There are two balconies with rocking chairs where you can while away the hours and observe a slower pace.  You will have full use of the Gathering Room, which has a 36-inch TV, with digital cable and a DVD/VHS player with three love seats—each with two recliners, making a total of six recliners.  If you do need to work, the Freedom Room contains a large desk and table, thus easily converting to an office.  You will enjoy free wireless internet.  Every room in the house, including the bathrooms, has at least one ceiling fan.

During warm weather, you may enjoy the beauty of the pool for either swimming or sunning. During autumn and spring, the back yard is a pleasant place to simply sit near the water and enjoy the park-like setting with tall oaks, deer, squirrels, and birds—sometimes even a couple of roadrunners—a place to reflect and meditate.  Breakfast may be served by the pool by special request.  Your full country breakfast will normally be served either in the lovely country dining room or in a more intimate setting in the breakfast area.  Now, read about the rooms, peruse the photographs, and decide which room you prefer.
